Well, our run of incredible winter mornings came to an abrupt end and all in one hit…. Wow.
The boys were faced with one of their greatest challenges yet, arctic like conditions, sleet, rain, wind… puddles and a little bit of mud, which was all new to our boys! In addition to the conditions, we were a man down fielding 17 players.
The game got underway and our boys scoffed at the conditions, with the midfield dominating the clearances. Spencer, Mans, Lachie and Angus teaming up beautifully and our starting rover Jack Robinson was at the bottom of every pack feeding the ball out to the midfield. I must admit at times I was wondering where Jacks’ snorkel was. Zac was running rampant up forward, whilst Jack A was repelling everything out of defense.
The game was a real grind with conditions worsening. This seemed to suit Charlie who was everywhere and looked like he was playing with a dry football. The boys continued digging in and Axel was able to take advantage of some great forward pressure and boot another goal.
Jnr Tractor was doing what tractors do in mud, whilst Hamish yet again showed that he has some of the cleanest hands in Hampton with a “Diesel” like gather and handball. Must admit, the blank look on the kids face at the Diesel reference was a highlight for parents and coaches.
Ollie G continued with his great marking form with a last line of defense grab and connected with Will who was bursting off the half back line to clear any danger.
Nick B utilised his long kicking and Tim and JD continued putting themselves in good positions throughout the day. Marcus chipped in for a steadying goal, which again resulted from terrific forward pressure.
The day ended with the song sung with great gusto in what was a fantastic display of resilience by the kids, who gutsed it out in what will be a memorable day for years to come.
A special thanks to all parents and friends who braved the conditions to support the boys.
