On a day where the footy gods reminded us all that footy is a winter sport, we were greeted by a cold and wet day at East Brighton. Despite the weather, many of the boys were very excited for their first taste of Rovers footy. There were many stories of kids who were awake early and dressed in their Rovers gear waiting for the game to start.
Our captains for the day were Ollie G and and Ollie H and they led the team well, particularly when it came to giving three cheers to East Brighton and the umpires as well as singing the song.
There were many highlights for the day with all the boys giving their all in terrible conditions. A big highlight for me were the great examples of the teamwork the boys put together where they linked up with multiple possessions that created goal scoring opportunities. A couple of examples that come to mind were when our backline, including Lachlan Matthews and Alex combined to clear out of the backline through the midfield that ultimately resulted in a goal. Alex was at is again in the midfield when he linked up through the middle and was able to kick us into attack, resulting in another goal. Finally, I thought Spencer handballing to Ollie for a goal was a great example of a time when a player could have had a shot at goal but chose to share the ball with a teamwork and create a certain goal.
We had great contributions from all our boys, but special shout outs to Zac who played strongly all day, Jack A who shares more than a number with Jack Riewoldt, and our award winners Will, Tim and Leo. Finally, it was great to see the boys sing the song with such gusto and no doubt over the course of the season they will all learn the words.
It was a great start to the season and I am really proud of all the boys.
Thanks again to all our parent helpers. I think we have a really good group and look forward to a fun year.
