Under 9 Maroon vs South Melbourne (R5)

15 May 2018 by HRJ

It was a little wet under foot down at Albert Park for our 10am match against South Melbourne Districts. The boys were anticipating a tough game after advancing to a new division. With two of our boys away, the match was played with only 16 players. At the first bounce, a great tap from Angus A, allowing the Rovers mids to pounce on the ball, moving it into the forward line where Charlie linked in with Jacob, resulting in the Rover’s first goal for the quarter. The mids got on top early with Angus A. doing most of the bullocking work assisting our smaller mids, John, Will Jones and Ziggy, to get clean use of the ball. They kept forcing the ball into our forward line, our forwards mounting pressure on their opponents, resulting in a second goal kicked by Jacob.

The second quarter was a more even contest with South Melbourne getting the ball into their forward line a few times. However, the Rovers backs fought hard, continually forcing the ball back to our mids and forwards. Once the ball was in the forward line, the boys were able to lock it in until a goal was scored. A great display of determination and teamwork culminating a goal each for Jacob, Monty and Charlie.

The third quarter with the new-look midfield led by Nate and Will McKeon, winning the battles in close, linking up with Reid, Kai and Riley on the outside, kept kicking the ball into the forward line, giving our forwards every opportunity to have a stellar quarter. Thanks to the push from the midfield and the hard contests in the forward line, enabled goals to Will Jones, Jack and Ziggy.

In the fourth quarter, the ball hardly reached our backline because of the strength and drive from the mids. The forward line really seemed to open up this quarter facilitating the forwards to pepper the goals. This resulted in Ziggy kicking 2 goals and Angus Hare and Jack scoring a goal each.

It was a great result, a great team effort, with all the boys working hard. Looking forward to next week.

Best Players: Angus A., Charlie, Jacob, John, Nate, Riley, Will McKeon, Ziggy.
