Under 9 Red vs Ajax (R1)

16 April 2018 by HRJ

The opening round of the 2018 SMJFL under 9s football season saw classic Melbourne football weather at its best – the conditions for the boys were cold, wet and slippery. It was a slow start to the game, as both teams adjusted to the difficult conditions. Eventually the Rovers scored their first goal and the momentum of the team soon picked up. Two more goals were scored quickly and the lead was 20 – 0 at the first term break.

The second quarter was an amazing effort from the team, with the boys adding a further 7 goals to the scoreboard, creating an impressive lead of 10 goals – nil.

The huddle at the half time break saw the boys pretty happy with their efforts, and the advice from the coaches was to “keep doing what you’re doing boys.”
With changes made to all positions across the team, the skills displayed only proved that the boys could attack just as well as they could defend. At 3 quarter time, the difference on the scoreboard was now 90 – 0.

The opposition had the opportunity to add to scoreboard in the final quarter.

It was great to be back on the sideline cheering on the team with many of the same faces from last season. Yet it was also fantastic to have some new faces amongst the crowd, and we would like to welcome them to team Red and we hope you enjoyed your first taste of this years season – welcome to Jack Hawkins, Will McKean and John Phillips.

We would also liked to thank Ethan Fix and Jackson Nelson for filling in for our team today. You’re efforts were greatly appreciated.

Today’s final score was definitely a fantastic result, and hopefully a sign off things to come for the boys during season of 2018. But the most exciting thing about today’s game was not the score – it was the teamwork. The group displayed outstanding camaraderie time and time again throughout each the four quarters. It was sensational to see the boys all working as a team. They played hard, but they were unselfish and most importantly they played together. A magnificent game – well done boys! Let’s hope it’s a great season.
