This week was a real cheek clencher … our first ever if I’m going to be honest (which isn’t my strength), so far we’ve been smashed and smashed others, but nothing like this.
It was a bit of a slow start –(what with the holidays and it being minus 11 …ish.) but despite us having more braids than a Jamaican tourism brochure we dusted off the cobwebs and ploughed on.
Sooo the game.. Georgia burst out of the gates and decided she was going to make an impact which inspired Edie to have moments where she thought she was a tractor and ploughed down or dragged the Bentleigh girls until she was rewarded with a Behind. Not long after Aliah got our first goal. Yay!! They/Them/Those Girls followed up with a goal of their own so we ended the first ¼ on 7-6
Leigh went into a blind panic having never been faced with such a quandary but said something rousing. At least that’s what I think since this week I’d brought a chair, beanie, puffer and a blanket and it would have taken blood or really good coffee to get me out of my happy place.
Then Emily took a top mark, Mia K and Eloise made sure that Bentleigh Junior had to work for it. Clearly the holidays had done the job for Leni, who had her Mongrel on and had a big run then a small kick to herself which was very cool. Mika cleared out well and showed some real grunt.
Lottie scored a great goal, Andy bellowed, Mia S tackled like a demon, Mark bellowed.
This is where Leigh really shone, no hollow threats or promises of cash, just “if you’re not running I’ll bench you and I want 3 goals this ¼”
Bentleigh burst out of the gates and Alice tackled well giving Edie the chance to get it back to our midfield, which gave our girls the space they needed. Olivia scored a goal but because one of the BJ’s (nope not touching it) touched it apparently it’s only worth one point. I think it’s a silly rule but have given up on the Judiciary, they’re clearly not listening to me.
Mika then scored 2, count them 2 goals, the second particularly impressive because Leigh yelled “Snap it” and she did it, which in itself is remarkable but that I knew what he meant makes it truly special.
Liv scored a proper goal and did a celebratory grass angel making it the ¼ that the coach requested. Our last ¼ was an exercise in maintaining the lead and despite everything the BJ’s (teehee) threw at them Mia’s K&S, Lottie, Olivia, Elicia, Mika and Edie showed that the Rovers girls will rise to whatever is thrown at them, as long as it’s not housework or homework of course.
