Under 12 Girls vs St Kilda City (R7)

6 June 2017 by HRJ

Well, it may have been a brilliant day of sunshine yesterday, but between 12.30 and 2pm at Highett Reserve, it was raining – goals that is – and all in the Rovers favour! Our U12 girls are getting better by the week and were so determined yesterday, that they held their opponent to a measly 2 behinds. It’s amazing what a little bit of confidence can do.

Under the very capable coaching team comprising Callum, who stepped up from Assistant Coach, and Gathers, who filled Callum’s large shoes yesterday, the girls were off to a flying start.

Sassy showed her normal grit and determination and wasn’t at all fazed by scary number 23 from St Kilda, whilst Daisy assisted the first goal that Maddy kicked under pressure. Then there was ducking and weaving and a goal by Daisy – boy our forward line was strong! Laura showed some great tackling skills, whilst Sassy’s fierce efforts resulted in another Daisy goal.

The second quarter began with a couple of strong plays by Daisy. A couple of minutes in, a bit of fumbling in the forward pocket, and Edie kicked a goal that bounced the right way through. Off to a good start. Daisy had the ball on a string and there was no way she was letting the ball past her in the centre zone, even if it meant diving on top of it. She even gave away a free kick, stood on the mark, then ran back and marked the kick (well, that’s what it looked like anyway!)

She earned a rest in the third quarter, and play soon made it’s way to the St Kilda forward zone, and lingered there for a while. They scored their first behind, but the girls in defence were having none of that, and the ball quickly came back to our forward zone, and a snap shot by little speedy Gonzales Lottie resulted in a behind. Then a rushed behind – our forwards were peppering the goals! Then a mark and snap by Lizzie for a goal, another goal by Maddy, a behind by Eloise (so close!), so much action!

The final quarter saw a strong mark by Mika to push the play into our forward zone. A bit of fumbling by the pack and Mika, roving the pack, snapped accurately for another major. Our accuracy is getting awesome! And then to finish off our goal scoring, Mia broke away from another pack, and kicked a beautiful goal.

So many goals makes for a very long report but every single person in the team contributed to the strong win yesterday. Every single person contributed to every single goal, including great efforts by Leni, Olivia, Emily, Lily and Georgia, to name a few. Regardless of the score, the girls all listened to Callum and did what was asked of them.

Well done!
