Round 4 v Waverley Park. What a challenge against a team with whom we would probably be vying for a spot in the four. They pushed Chelt-Highett last week to 8 points.
We knew we had 9 players out leaving us with the bare 18. We knew several of our boys had played yesterday.
The first quarter saw us push and push against the wind but skill errors cost us and eventually Wav Park lifted and started to break free. The memories of last week came flooding back and they had loose men everywhere.
Stern words at quarter time, once again addressing the issue of poor manning up and lack of intensity and there was a palpable lift in endeavour in the second quarter. Several shots at goal resulting in points, then a turnover and a Waverley park goal…just not fair!!
The second half was similar with much better attack on the footy, some beautiful pieces of linking up handball and switching the play…but dropped chest marks, missed targets, poor tackling, not giving the first option and poor manning up were still a feature and cost us dearly.
The result: a 50 point loss.
A simple statistic to consider: in Round 1 we had 50 tackles (win), in Round 2 we had 37 (loss), today we had only 32 (loss) & one player had 8 of these!!…which means that the other 17 players had only 24 tackles between them…not good enough.
Awards:
Cam Morris – another terrific game – disciplined run forward and back to defend and great ball use
Ferg Murray – excellent game with strong intercept marks and selfless acts
Zac Watson – lifted dramatically in intensity after a rev up at quarter time…well done Zac
Special mentions: Miles Bergman – 8 tackles with 5 rewarded for holding the ball; Campbell Tweedie – daring run and fierce attack on the contest; Nick Van Der Linden – tough, classy and disciplined
Bad luck boys…they were better than us today, but let’s work hard because that’s what it takes to be better…and I still believe we are better than we have shown over the past two weeks.
It doesn’t get any easier as we have Beaumaris next week…so get to training as we have plenty to work on!
Well done again to the Div 3 boys who had a massive win against Sth Melb today and sit at 3-zip after 3! You can’t ask much more than that.
