Hi team,
The team welcomed three first time players on the weekend: Tyler Birt, Lachlan Curtis and Kobe Knight, and was lead out by captains Reilly Vien and Thomas Strickland.
The first half was a very tight tussle between both sides and it was great to see such improvement early from Reilly Vien and Henry O’Keefe, and Liam Farr’s ability to read the play was excellent. The third quarter was certainly our best quarter of the year so far with Archie Dowling, Hewy Sawatzki and Adrian Gonzales locking the ball in our forward line for most of the quarter. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite capitalise on the scoreboard.
A great goal by Ben Montgomery tied the game early in the last term and we had a chance to repeat last weeks come from behind win. Late in the game James Jebb and Luke Kollmorgen combined to provide some great run from the centre to pump it long into our forward line on several occasions.
Other highlights were great ‘in and under’ attack on the ball which saw Reilly Vien clear the ball from the pack and Henry O’Keefe kicking out of defence with accuracy to a teammate.
During this game it was great to see some of our boys such as Hewy Sawatzki, Luke Kollmorgen, James Jebb and Liam Farr enjoying more freedom of space on a larger ground than last week and having the confidence to run with the ball, shrug off tackles and even try the odd bounce.
Beaumaris is always tough opposition but our boys won the play for almost the entire match, we just couldn’t quite capitalise on the scoreboard, but the encouraging sign is that we almost doubled their scoring shots. We are most impressed with our team’s attitude to never give up and with this they will learn heaps and have a lot of fun this season.
Thursday’s training will be at 5.30 at Castlefield as usual, l am going to speak to the other coaches about rotating our location on the ground each week at training as it is important that we all get to train on all areas of our home ground. This week l will aim to base us around the goals area to do some drills and spend some time increasing the confidence of the boys while kicking for goal under a little pressure.
See you Thursday at training.
