Facing up to South Melbourne Districts at Castlefield Oval we were expecting a tough game because they are a team that always comes well prepared.
In the first quarter we were kicking into the wind but managed to match South Melbourne kicking 2.2 each. This was an even team effort across the field with the boys demonstrating great skills for the first term of the year.
The second quarter we started to find our feet and it saw us kick away scoring another 2.2 while our defenders held our opposition scoreless. Will Boyd Turner and Patty Wilson were both prominent in the midfield creating plenty of opportunities for the forwards and bringing others into the game.
In the third term South Melbourne came out and put the pressure on our team and managed to outscore us by a point. Our back line was really challenged during this period with the ball spending a lot time down there. But, some good defensive work from Joe Sansotta and Miles Cooper ensured that we limited the damage on the scoreboard. Hugo Tuffley started to look dangerous collecting plenty of possessions through a lot of running up and down the ground.
At three quarter time we were only holding a slender lead and the challenge was thrown down to the boys to pick up their intensity and the whole team responded in the final term. The backline was solid with a couple of great tackles by Campbell Holtham and Harvey Atchison. In the midfield Patty Wilson and our captain for the day, Sonny King, started to get the ball moving into the forward line. But it was up in attack the boys really started to fire. With Lachie Nolan trying to take mark of the year every time the ball came near him, Miles Cooper repeatedly kicking the ball to hot spot for us and Domenic Todarello always looking dangerous we managed to kick away with the game scoring 3.3 in the last quarter.
It was a tough call to hand out awards with many deserving players. But, in the end they were well earned by Harvey Atchison, Hugo Tuffley and Miles Cooper.
Goals: Patrick Wilson 2, Lachie Nolan 2, Alex Condon 2, Hugo Tuffley, Will Boyd Turner, Miles Cooper.
A special thanks to Jackson Nelson and Joshua Sill who played up from U9s to help with numbers today. But even greater commendation to Joshua and Jack Carson who both volunteered to play a half a game with South because they were short of numbers. These selfless acts do not go unnoticed and are the type of thing that will make our team great. Well done boys.
