Under 12 Maroon vs Ormond (R3)

30 April 2018 by HRJ

How sweet it is, when it all comes together.

Our first couple of games of the season were challenging and perhaps short our absolute best. We knew we were capable of much more. As a result we have been training hard and working on better structures of play to create more space, more run and more effective possession.

As we lined up at EE Gun Reserve, and scanned the enormity of the ground with its huge wings, our plan was to drive it down the corridor with a strong central spine structure. We started the game with a renewed energy. It was a different mindset. Chris and I have been drumming into the boys the importance of backing themselves, and trusting their ability. Our first quarter was strong, and we continued to build momentum from there. There were inspiring efforts from every player on the field. We simply didn’t have enough awards today. Taj Hotton was excellent out of the centre and kicked 2 goals. Jem Thomas played another solid performance as a sweeping defensive centreman and tirelessly put his head over the ball. Mitch Tuffley was also instrumental in moving the ball forward out of the middle. Joe Weber and Orlando shared the ruck, and also created a leading role building a centre half back defensive wall. Luke Ryan had enormous presence today across half forward, taking countless marks and hitting forward targets. While usually very dangerous up forward we played Matt Gleeson at full back, and he showed how versatile a player he is with a strong performance back there. Jacob Cassidy was also exceptional, playing both forward and back, busting through packs like a steam train. Christian Beare proved why the 1 percenters are so important, laying some important shepherds. The list went on and on. A wonderful example of the importance of every player working together as a united team. I said to the boys at the 3/4 break, “Quite simply, Effort = scoreboard”. When you put in, you reap the rewards. A great game where we witnessed the return of confidence, and had a lot of fun along the way.

We were so proud of our wonderful group today, and it was so good to watch the boys sing the song again with passion and pride.

Goal kickers: Taj Hotton 2, Jay Todd 1, Anthony Harrak 1

Awards. Outstanding Achievement Award went to Ant Harrak who kicked his first goal of the season. Ollie Sutherland was awarded the Guts & Determination award for his relentless defensive work, and Harry Tuffley took the Brown Cow Player of the Day Award for four quarters of outstanding effort also in the back half.

Next week we have 5 boys who will be celebrating their 50 game milestone. Get down to Castlefield at 1.30 next Sunday to cheer them on.
