Under 14 Div 2 vs Brighton Beach (R2)

8 May 2019 by Paul Carrigan

Rovers 12-12-84 def Brighton Beach 0-4-4

Firstly, a shout out to everyone’s mate, Maxy Carroll, Max suffered a wrist injury Sunday and will miss a few weeks, not great for Max or our team as he is in good form.

The squad trained real well last Wednesday night, Christian, Zach and Big O noticed how invested the boy’s minds were, this normally means they are switched on for Sunday.

I noted that a few boys didn’t play school footy for BGS on the Saturday, I felt they might be saving themselves for a huge game against school mates that play for BBJFC.

Each week I go and look at the away venue to get a look at how it is surface wise and what we might expect with the breeze etc, Saturday arvo I went down to South Rd oval and noticed BGS Old Boys were playing, the ball was moving sideways more than forward as the south west breeze was ferocious, I was hoping the breeze would abate on the Sunday, it did but not much.

Never understood why you would play football there.

Game Day

We welcomed Mason Paewai in for his first game ever, the big fellow had a smile from ear to ear, we formed a guard of honour for small Mason C as he was playing his 100th game, I don’t normally sing my son’s praise, but he has played 99 great games prior to Sunday and always wore the jumper with pride.

The pre-game was great, all players loud and up and about, the strict instruction was to attack only via the west side of the oval, we got bottled up in the first quarter and kicked the ball on the full several times and scored 4 points with the wind, although we owned 85% of the Sherrin. No real stand out players in the first stanza although Mason C did take a nice mark and his shot faded to the right-hand side. Our endeavour was great, but we hadn’t hit the board.

The second quarter started, and we were on, Ted Mackie locked onto every ball that came his way, for mine the BOG, marked, kicked, clean and smart, best 4 qrt effort thus far.

Oli Howell worked his way into the game, Jackie G and Kyle played smart in front, kicking into the breeze all these boys hit the score board.

We went into the shed at the half to plot how we would attack the second half and let the league know we want to go back to Div 1, we were up by 27.

After half time the mids took over, Arch, Lach, Kento , Jules, Elliott, Kai, Kalab got plenty, The boys were relentless with running and overlap, the transition from offence running to defence running was great, the bench rotations were every 4 mins with everyone playing multi roles, no one had made a comment until Nuts tells me he had come off in every quarter, he was well counselled in the car on the way home.

Lucas, Ben, Josh, the three musketeers played great, D-Man bobbed up and threw his body in, Big M shot out a hand ball and the siren sounds with the boys winning 84-4.

Alexander, Max and big M did a great job in the middle, Alex took two great contested marks on a day not easy to read at the wind-swept oval.

Cecil was like lightning, his speed and cut off marks were first class, Matteo on a wing, half back was smart and punched the ball forward that helped set up a goal early in the 3rd quarter.

Ted Mckimm was dam cold at full back and went forward with great effect.

Real happy to sing the song and go back to the Rovers.

Things we did well

  • Our transition output was first rate after quarter time.
  • Given the conditions I was happy with our skills
  • Our clear instructions were understood and applied with smart play.
  • Every boy contributed.

Well done boys

Caggs
