Played against Ashwood at Essex Heights Reserve, Mt Waverly. We won 31-17!!!!
AGAINST THE ODDS BUT THE ROVERS GIRLS PREVAILED
With only 14 fit players on the ground (and 13 towards the end) and with the premiership coach and assistant coach away, the odds were stacked against us.
Don’t tell that though to the Rovers girls who teamed up as one to bring home a superb victory; one Coyney and Jacko would be immensely proud of.
Speaking of being proud, Coyney would have loved the way Ali lead her team and inspired them onto victory. Ali kicked three rippers by playing on and backing herself. She even spent time in defence when kicking against the wind and was rock solid.
This game was won because everyone on the team played like it was their last. The awards could easily could have gone to anyone of the 15 starters.
The handball was super slick as was the run and carry. As a result, the game opened up and so did the opportunities.
Ali, Tilly, and Lilly all seized on the fast ball coming into the forward line. Well done.
Up back, you girls were sensational. Meaghan, Tessa, Tamsyn, Bec and Katie were all manic in the way they defended. Katie played a blinder and her best game for the year. Meaghan’s and Bec’s contested marking went up to another level. They were simply great to watch. By the way get out of the way when Tamysyn and Tessa are coming at you. Some of those tackles they laid were bone crushing.
A special mention to Alex for a super shut down game on Ashwood’s no 31 who in the first qtr was causing some damage. Alex stuck to the task all day (all 3 qtrs that is!) nullifying her opponent and genuinely reducing her influence. Well done Alex.
Congrats and well done to the mids/winger Steph, Kim, Bella, Annie and Ella. Annie won almost every tap many of which were to advantage; what was even more impressive was Annie’s sticky hands, run & carry and long kicking. Great game Annie. Kim played a ripper, Steph was her usual dominant self, Bella Everywhere (as Sally calls her) lived up to her name and also took a fantastic mark in the forward pocket. Ella presented continuously and bravely fought on albeit with an ankle injury.
Finally, a big pat on the back to Anika for turning up (shin splints and all) and taking to the ground.
Well played team. One to enjoy.
